This is a guest post by Christie, the blogger at MiscBytes, where she writes about all kinds of internet fun with an occasional splash of science. Follow her @MiscBytes
Lots of us get a new Twitter account, follow some of our friends, get followed back, then start talking to each other with replies back and forth, even about very personal stuff. I see this all the time, and of course there’s nothing wrong with it as long as you realize that anyone in the world can see your tweets unless you protect them. Just go to http://twitter.com/USERNAMEHERE and you can see every tweet this person has done, unless some have been deleted. Want to know what John Chow’s been up to? How To Twitter
If you are familiar with the internet and/or social networking websites, Twittering should be a breeze. Check out our previous post about what is Twitter if you’re still unfamiliar. If you wish to Twitter (post and read tweets) you will need to sign up for a new account at Twitter.com first.
While setting up your account, you may provide your email password when asked, if you wish to run an auto search for your friends (from your email account) who also use twitter. Alternately, you may also search for known or famous users after you have signed up. You may then choose to be a Follower of any of them; by doing so, you will be privy to their updates or Tweets.
Correspondingly, if you approve of any user’s request to be your Follower, their profile page gets updated each time you post a Tweet. A Tweet may be up to 140 characters long and may contain any information, personal or impersonal.

What is Twitter
You could have not missed hearing about Twitter, especially not after it was all over the news for helping bring out information during the recent Iran Revolution.
So what is Twitter? It’s a social networking website with a difference – it allows for microblogging, which is the practice of text blogging that makes text updates available to either a select group or every user on the website. External applications or SMS may also be used (in addition to the website) to post what are known as ‘tweets’ on a user’s profile, accessible to his friends, called his ‘followers’. Watch the video below for a quick intro.
